The taxi scene in Budapest has struggled with issues of price gouging and scams that frequently target tourists. In our previous article, Budapest Taxi Companies: Tips and Recommendations for Visitors, we discussed how visitors could protect themselves when choosing taxi services. Recent police actions now indicate that Budapest’s taxi industry is undergoing a cleanup, aimed at making it safer for tourists.
In a recent operation, several taxi drivers—nicknamed “hyenas” for their predatory practices—were arrested. These drivers reportedly used mafia-style tactics, charging tourists exorbitant fares and collecting protection money from fellow taxi drivers. Only those who paid were allowed to work in high-demand areas, and tourists often faced fares up to ten times the normal rate.
In late August, over 100 police officers and tax investigators conducted a coordinated raid at five key locations, including Buda Castle, Váci Street, and Széchenyi Thermal Bath. During this action, officials seized six taxis, multiple POS devices, taximeters, and other electronic items, along with narcotics and approximately $25,000 in cash.
The recent crackdown emphasizes the importance of choosing reliable taxi services when visiting Budapest. Here are some practical tips for staying safe:
Check for official markings. While all licensed taxis in Budapest are yellow, not every yellow car is legitimate. Make sure the taxi has logos, plates, and other markers of a licensed service.
Avoid unmarked private taxis. Independent, unmarked taxis often come with hidden fees and high rates. Official taxis follow set fares, so you know what to expect upfront.
Use trusted apps. Apps like Bolt, Főtaxi, and City Taxi allow you to book reliable rides, see estimated costs, and access driver details, providing greater transparency and security.
Stay at designated taxi ranks. In busy areas frequented by tourists, some drivers may offer unsolicited rides. Sticking to official taxi ranks or using ride-hailing apps is safer and more transparent.
These recent arrests mark an encouraging shift in Budapest’s taxi market toward greater transparency and security for tourists and locals alike. Law enforcement efforts allow licensed taxi companies to offer reliable transportation, so visitors can explore the city's sights with increased confidence.
